What is an instance family?

An instance family is a classification of instance types by use.

At this time, the following groups are available

  • general purpose
  • Computing Optimization
  • memory optimization
  • Accelerated Computing
  • Storage Optimization
    • Sequential reads and writes to TB-scale data sets

R5 Instance

R5 instances are the best instance type for memory-bound workloads.

It is an ideal instance for applications that can take advantage of superior network throughput and packet rate performance.

Use this instance for high-performance databases, web-scale distributed in-memory caches, medium-scale in-memory databases, real-time big data analytics, and other enterprise applications.

Therefore, the
ideal instance for workloads that process big data sets in real time.
The following is a list of the most suitable instances.

A1 Instance

An A1 instance is one of the generic instances.

The ideal instance type for scale-out Arm-based workloads
and can provide significant cost savings.

This is not an instance for big data processing.

T3 Instance

The T3 instance is one of the generic instances.

Next-generation burstable general-purpose instance type that delivers baseline levels of CPU performance for as long as you need it, whenever you need it.
Features bursting CPU utilization for as long as needed
The bursty instance type is a next-generation bursty general-purpose instance type that provides baseline-level CPU performance.

This is also not an instance for big data processing.

M5 Instance

The M5 instance is one of the generic instances.

This family offers
balanced computing, memory, and networking resources, making it suitable for many applications.
The family is also suitable for many other applications.

This is also not an instance for big data processing.

    • With "Scheduled Reserved Instances," you can daily, weekly, monthly and three patterns of scheduled buying. This feature is currently available in Virginia, Oregon, and Ireland The only regions where this feature is currently available are Virginia, Oregon, and Ireland.
    • Scheduled Reserved Instances allow you to purchase recurring capacity reservations at specified start times and durations on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis over the course of a year. Capacity can be reserved in advance and made available when needed. Fees are paid for the time the instance is scheduled, even if the instance is not used. Scheduled Reserved Instances are in error if they are scheduled for less than 4 hours/day, 24 hours/week, 100 hours/month, or 1200 hours/year.
